We're determined to prove that toilet paper is about more than just wiping bums. We make all of our products with environmentally friendly materials, and we donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for those in need.
Total amount we've donated to date to help fund hygiene and sanitation projects.
We’ve saved a load of trees by making our products from bamboo and recycled paper.
That’s the water we’ve saved by making our products with eco friendly materials.
These are the greenhouse gas emissions avoided by making our products with more sustainable materials.
We think toilets are pretty funny, but we started Who Gives A Crap when we learnt that 2.3 billion people (roughly 40% of the world’s population) don’t have access to a toilet. Unfortunately that’s not very funny. Around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That's almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. Luckily, toilets are proven to be a great solution—they provide dignity, health and an improved quality of life. And in case that wasn’t enough, it’s been shown that a dollar invested in sanitation yields $5.50 in increased economic prosperity. Toilets are magical!
To do our part, we donate half of our profits to non-profit organisations working to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries. WaterAid is one such organisation and has deep experience and skill in implementing high impact sanitation projects throughout the developing world. To date, we’ve donated $1,175,000, which is enough to help tens of thousands of people in need, and we’re just getting started!
Ever wonder what we do with the 50% of our profits we don’t donate? We’re buying an island! Just kidding. The more our business grows, the more we can donate and the more impact we can have. That’s why we invest almost all of the other 50% into growing the company. We plan to open more distribution centres, hire more talented people, develop new products and find more innovative ways to improve our existing ones – all to make sure we’re around for the next 33 years and beyond. On top of growing our business, it’s incredibly important for us to prove our profit-for-purpose business model can work. The more people see this, the more social enterprises like ours can get off the ground and do great things!
More people in the world have mobile phones than toilets. Think about that next time you’re texting on the loo!
Closer to home, we’ve also been amazed that toilet paper is still, largely, made with freshly-cut trees. We’re cutting down trees, wiping our bums and flushing them down the toilet, consuming loads of energy and water along the way. At Who Gives A Crap we only use forest friendly materials in all of our products, meaning we’ve already produced enough to save thousands of trees and thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. After all, trees should be for hugging, not wiping!
